The past four months have brought a run of restaurant openings that landed specifically in Sarasota's off-season, and the July and August event slate is deeper than it has been in years. If your standing plan is still "beach, then Publix, then home by dark," you are missing what the city is actually doing right now.
Here is what changed, where it changed, and how to work it into a normal week.
University Town Center Quietly Became A Restaurant District
UTC has spent years as a shopping stop with mall food attached. In the first half of 2026 that reversed. A cluster of independent and chef-driven concepts opened within a few blocks of each other, all of them worth a specific trip rather than a post-errand default.
- Mistero 1 Pizza, 5231 University Pkwy Suite 111, opened in June at The Market at UTC. It is chef Renato Viola's Miami-born concept, built around five-point star-shaped pies, calzones, a burrata bar, a Nutella pizza for dessert, and dough made with imported Italian flour and proofed 72 hours. The ricotta-filled Star Luca is the one to order first.
- Blu Kouzina, 295 N Cattlemen Rd Suite 4, brought its St. Armands Circle Greek menu to a second location at University Town Center in March. Worth noting for anyone who has given up on driving to the Circle in season.
- Kitchen Social, 257 N Cattlemen Rd #81, is the Nashville-born fast-casual chain's first Florida location in the former Rusty Bucket space, with smash burgers, crispy chicken sandwiches, loaded bowls, and craft cocktails.
- Peachey's Baking Co., 999 Cattlemen Rd Unit E, is the Amish-style donut shop's second brick-and-mortar, with sourdough-leavened doughnuts, soft pretzels, and coffee drinks in a 1,480 square foot space.
The pattern here matters. These are not tenants filling vacancies. They are second locations of concepts that already earned an audience elsewhere, betting that the north edge of the city has finally reached the density to support them. That is a meaningful signal for anyone who has lived here long enough to remember when Cattlemen Road was mostly car dealerships.
Two Revivals That Are Actually Worth The Drive
The bigger story is in the middle of the city.
Hob Nob Drive-In is back. The 1701 N Washington Blvd counter spot was a Sarasota original since 1957 and closed in 2024 after 67 years, and reopened this spring under new ownership with the familiar black-and-white stripes, counter ordering, and a focused menu of smash burgers, chicken tenders, onion rings, fries, and milkshakes. If you moved here after 2024 and only ever heard people talk about it, this is your window to understand what they meant.
Over in Southside Village, Alma de España took the space at 1830 S Osprey Ave Suite 104. The restaurant translates to Soul of Spain and serves Spanish tapas and grill dishes in the former space of vegan restaurant Ka Papa Cuisine. Chef and owner Elier Rodriguez trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Atlanta.
The Southside Village block is going to keep shifting. Adeline, the fine-dining tenant at 1920 Hillview St, is closing October 4, and co-owner Edward Zaki plans to transform the space into Mimi, a more casual and affordable restaurant and cocktail lounge, opening in November. Worth putting on your radar now if that is your walking radius.
The through-line across every one of these openings is casual. Prix fixe tasting menus are not what is showing up in 2026. What is showing up is counter service, small plates, wood-fired pies, and neighborhood bars with 40-seat patios. Read that however you want to read it.
The Summer Calendar Is Actually Busy This Year
For years the reliable summer answer was Summer Circus Spectacular and not much else. That is no longer accurate. Here is what is currently running, with venues and windows, so you can plug it into a Tuesday without a search bar.

A few practical notes. The Summer Festival of Rowing at Nathan Benderson Park is free to watch and easily the most underused spectator morning in the city. Bring coffee, walk the loop, leave by ten. Barks & Brews on The Green at UTC pairs neatly with the new Peachey's or Blu Kouzina if you time it right, since both are within walking distance of the lawn.
For comedy, McCurdys has a stronger August than usual, with Tom Arnold on July 31, Kevin Nealon on August 6, Paul Ollinger on August 13, and Kevin McCaffrey on August 19. Sarasota Anime-Fest lands at Robarts Arena on August 15 if you have kids or teenagers to entertain.
Savor Sarasota Gave You A New Baseline
If you skipped it this year, the June program is worth understanding as a market signal rather than just a two-week deal. From June 1 through June 14, dozens of participating restaurants throughout Sarasota County offered prix fixe lunches for $25 per person and dinners for $45 per person, and this year marked Savor Sarasota's 21st anniversary, with 55 local restaurants signed up. That is your realistic ceiling for a nice dinner in this market right now. When you look at a menu the rest of the year, compare against that number rather than against what a comparable meal cost in 2019.
The Civic Item Worth Walking For
On July 13, 2026, the City of Sarasota hosts a ribbon cutting for The Nature Park Phase One at 1000 Circus Blvd, following the park's initial opening in December 2023. If you live near Fruitville or in the neighborhoods east of Tuttle, this is the walk you have been waiting for. Phase One means marked trails, finished access points, and a version of the site that is legible for the first time. Go in the morning while the light is soft.
How To Actually Use This
Pick one restaurant you have not tried, one event on the table above, and one morning outdoors. Rotate weekly. That is the whole strategy. The reason locals miss the summer season is not that nothing is happening, it is that the calendar is scattered across a dozen venues and never lands in one place at once.
A last note on tempo. The dining pattern in 2026 is trending toward earlier, more casual, and closer to home. Adeline's operators cited extreme heat, lingering hurricane impacts, fewer international visitors, and the challenges of operating an upscale, special-occasion destination in a seasonal market as the reasons for closing.
